Celebration of Traditional Music October 26-29

Thursday October 26

Start this year’s Celebration of Traditional Music by attending In These Fields: A Folk Opera written by Silas House and Sam Gleaves.

8:00 PM – 10:00 PM –  Union Church

  • A play exploring the importance of food in Appalachian history and culture, covering 175 years in the American South. The monologues are written by best-selling author, Silas House, and the songs are written by Appalachian singer and songwriter Sam Gleaves. The cast includes: Adamna Barton, Carla Gover, Deborah Payne, Jason Howard, Silas House, and Sam Gleaves.  ($10 suggested, general admission)

Friday October 27

12:00 PM – 5:00 PM – Stephenson Hall, Appalachian Center Gallery

  • Appalachian Ballad Symposium. Speakers include: Loyal Jones, Elizabeth DiSavino, and Chris Brashear.

8:00 PM – 10:00 PM – Phelps-Stokes Chapel

  • Appalachian Ballad Concert featuring:  Alice Gerrard, Sarah Wood, and Chris Brashear,

Saturday October 28

1:00 PM – 5:00PM – Stephenson Hall (rooms to be posted in Stephenson front foyer)

  • Workshops and Presentations with Alice Gerrard, Chris Brashear, and Sarah Wood.

8:00 PM – 10:00 PM – Phelps-Stokes Chapel

  • Concert featuring: Alice Gerrard, Sarah Wood, and Chris Brashear

10:00 PM- 12:00 AM – Woods-Penniman Commons

  • Open Contra Dance
