Union Church was honored to welcome movement artists Tevyn East and Jay Beck, as they performed Blood on the Cedars this Sunday. A presentation filled with sounds, dance, poetry, and Scripture, it challenged us to consider the ways in which the earth is in danger of being destroyed by the greed of its inhabitants.
Using Isaiah 37:21-29, a warning prophecy to the conquering king Sennacherib who had destroyed the beautiful and majestic Cedars of Lebanon in his conquering of the land, East and Beck called us to account for the ways in which our own attempts to conquer might in fact be calling forth destruction upon ourselves. The word of hope in this was God’s ultimate power over all to restore and resurrect, but it is our choice whether we participate in that process.
Blood on the Cedars will be presented again at Berea College’s Danforth Chapel on Tuesday at noon, and Tevyn East will present a different show, Leaps and Bounds, on Thursday at 3:00pm in Phelps Stokes Hall on Berea College’s campus.
We hope you enjoy these photos, taken by Rachael White, which tell part of the story.
