The Migrant Trail is opportuny to learn about the issues at the border in Arizona. The Migrant Walk is usually a seven day walk from Sasabe to Tucson with lectures along the way. This year, as in the past two years due to Covid, the event is a one day virtual “walk”. Our dear friend Dorothy Chao, who has completed both a physical walk and a virtul one, higly recommends the experience to anyone interested in the plight of migrants. A description of the event and registration information follows.
“The Alternative Migrant Trail,” a one-day Border Encuentro, which will take place on Saturday, June 4th and will feature amazing panels and speakers to talk about the current realities, discuss how we got to this point, and what we can do to envision a different future.
As with the previous two years, this years proceeds from registration fees, sponsorships, and donations will go to support four amazing organizations: Centro de Recursos para Migrantes (Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico), Indigenous Languages Office (Tucson, AZ), Casa de la Esperanza Community and Migrant Center (Sasabe, Sonora, Mexico), and the Justice for All Initiative Campaign.
While we are missing being physically present in the desert, we have opted to err on the side of caution and remain virtual again this year. We remain hopeful that next year will find us back to bearing witness in person, but feel that we have been of service to our pledge to bear witness on the border by supporting organizations that continue to serve those affected by our treacherous border policies despite being affected deeply by the global pandemic of COVID-19.
Attached is our current schedule for the Encuentro- we are very excited about the program that we have put together. We would love to have you join us again. If you are not able to make it, please consider helping us spread the work and/or make a donation to support our efforts to raise money for border justice work.
