Southern Faith Witness: A March and Rally for the Civil Rights Struggle of Our Era
On Tuesday, March 26, 2013, the Supreme Court of the United States begins hearing arguments on the constitutionality of the ban on gay marriage. The ban denies over 1400 civil rights, tax benefits, housing incentives and legal protections to thousands of loving committed Kentucky couples. Union Church is a community committed to the fair treatment of all persons and moved by our faith in Jesus and his impartial love, believe that all persons, gay and straight, are beloved of God and worthy of dignity and support in loving, committed relationships. You are invited to join in such a witness by accompanying Rev. Kent, Rev. Rachel and other Union Members to a rally in Frankfort, on March 26.
Opponents of equal marriage rights for same gendered couples often use religion as a blunt weapon to support this injustice. In order to proclaim the loving voice of justice in many of our churches, many faith communities are coming together for “Southern Faith Witness” a march and rally to the state capitol in Frankfort, coinciding with the deliberations of the US Supreme Court. Just like the historic march from Selma to Montgomery during the Civil Rights struggle of the 1960’s, we will make our voices heart and felt on March 26th in an opportunity to witness for love and justice.
