September 4, 2025

Next Sunday, Sept. 14!  Rev. Betsy Whaley will preach next week with Berea College Bluegrass Ensemble as special guests. We welcome Moderator Betsy Whaley to the pulpit as she brings the word about our church’s “Strategic Doing” prayers and plans. Rev. Kent has been invited to celebrate the installation of former Union Church member and intern, The Rev. Mark Pettis, to his new church in Cleveland, OH.

Open Table Community Meals Every Wednesday 5:30pm-6:30pm: The food is great, the company is better, the hungry are fed, and we pray the love Jesus will be shown!  Other Wednesday happenings:

· Kids’ Program, 6:00 pm in the Classroom near the Office

· Youth Group eats together, then meets in the 3rd floor Youth Rooms

· Handbell Ensemble Rehearsal, 6:30 pm in the 3rd floor Choir Rm

The Tibetan Buddhist monks of Tashi Kyil Monastery in Dehradun, India, will once again visit the Berea College campus from September 8 – 12. The following events in their itinerary are FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC:

Monday, September 8

· 12:00-1:00 pm: mandala opening ceremony (Hutchins Library)

· 7:00-8:30 pm: “The Story of Tibet” presentation (Draper Building, Room 100)

Tuesday, September 9

· 4:00-5:30 pm: “Introduction to Buddhism” workshop (Draper Building, Room 100)

Wednesday, September 10

· 3:00-4:30 pm: “Introduction to Meditation” workshop (Draper Building, Room 310)

Thursday, September 11

· 8:00-9:15 pm: Convocation performance (Phelps-Stokes Auditorium)

Friday, September 12

· 12:00-1:00 pm: mandala closing ceremony (Hutchins Library) followed by sand disposal (Brushy Fork Park)

· Sand mandala construction will be ongoing and open to public viewing at Hutchins Library during business hours from  September 8 -11. Tibetan handicrafts, books, and ritual items will be available for purchase at Hutchins Library throughout the sand mandala construction. All proceeds from merchandise sales will benefit the Tashi Kyil Monastery and its mission to preserve Tibetan cultural heritage in exile.

The monks’ visit to Berea is made possible by the Berea College Department of Asian Studies, the Office of the President of Berea College, and the Office of the Provost of Berea College.

Mary Lou Wiese is opening a bookstore in Old Town! Next to H&R Block, 210 N. Broadway, #5. She’ll open on Sept. 11 at 10 am – Mon-Sat. regular hours will be 10-16

Th Second Grow Appalachia Workshops at Union  Sept. 13 (register bit.ly/2025 seedworkshop3) – “How to Add Seed Crops to Your Farm Enterprise” – in the Community Room, 10-1,  lunch included.  Room in the Inn Fundraiser Sept. 13 at First Christian Church, 6:00 pm. Along with a delicious dinner, you’ll enjoy:

· A warm, welcoming atmosphere where friends and neighbors come together

· Inspiring stories of the impact your support makes possible

· Opportunities to give that directly help provide emergency winter shelter

Union Church has been selected as a “Luke 10, Learning to Do Justice” congregation. Rev. Kent and a team of members will travel to a special training in Maryland, Sept 25-29 and will return with innovative ways to help our community stand against Christian Nationalism and stand for the full and fair inclusion of ALL people in God’s vision of hope and justice.
