This Sunday we celebrated Good Shepherd Sunday, which is always the fourth Sunday after Easter. Rev. Kent reminded us of the ways that sheep know the voices of their shepherds, even in the midst of the chaos of many flocks coming together. He encouraged us to perk our ears to the voice of love, the voice that calls forth our very best selves and leads us onward toward justice and joy. It was also Mother’s Day, and we remembered the ways in which that day was founded as a call for mothers everywhere to arise in defense of their children’s health, needs, and rights. Together, then, we prayed this prayer written by Rev. Rachel, that we offer now to you:
Shepherding God, you prod us with a mother’s fierceness to go forth and do justice in the world in your name.
Mothering God, you guide us as a shepherd with gentleness, reminding us when we lose our way that you are always calling our names home.
With your rod and staff, comfort all those who are hurting and sick, who need your love and care.
Guide those struggling in war-torn, violent, and oppressed places. Lead them into your greenest pastures of healing and love.
Ever-present, ever-loving God, call our names, and help us to echo that call to all your children.
We give you thanks, as together we pray to you, Our Mother, Our Maker, and Our Father in heaven. Amen.
