Rev. Rachel in her sermon today on the Beatitudes stressed the reifying nature of Jesus inaugural sermon in the Gospel of Matthew. By blessing those seemingly without blessing, he challenges the status quo both for those in unfortunate circumstances, and for those who didn’t think it had anything to do with them. In these “troublous” times, she reminded us that our scriptures are full of strength and support for just such a time as this. Here is her prayer offered by worship leader Steve Gowler:
God, your requirements for us are simple, but not easy. Guide us in justice, kindness and mercy, and humility. Inspire us to speak love as our first language, always and everywhere. Clean our hearts and make them blessed, that we might become blessings to our hurting world. Let us never forget that you are our guide, our strength, our stronghold in stormy weather.
