Piano Technician removes keys and worn-out action from sanctuary piano. All the mechanisms will be rebuilt and returned by month’s end.
On June 21, piano technician, Ben Griffith, took the action of the 1984 Kawai grand piano back to his shop in Frankfort Kentucky. The action of a piano is the inside mechanisms of the piano that help produce its sound. So what in the world is going on? A piano’s sound is created by a hammer, made of wood and tightly compacted felt, striking the string which produces its unique timbre (sound). Over time (try 31 years…) the felt starts to harden due to age and needs to be replaced. All of the hammers must be replaced in order to make the sound equal and sound the same. Ben will also regulate the keys to make playing easier and will make sure the piano is nice and clean on the inside (it’s pretty dusty in there!). We appreciate all of the wonderful donations that have been made to help this project. Our instruments at Union Church are sure beloved and we are happy to see our congregation supporting the hard work of our music ministry!
Act fast — only the white unhighlighted keys are unclaimed! $50 a key! Buy 5 and Bob Boyce will make you a mobile from piano innards. Piano fundraiser total thus far – $3780 (includes donations and pledges).
No Summer Music activities on July 1. We will resume next week – the Music Theory Class will meet for the final time right after worship on July 8 in the Classroom.
Share-YOUR-Music Sunday, July 29
This is an opportunity for vocal and instrumental soloists and ensembles to share the music of their hearts in worship. If you would like to participate in this special worship service, please contact Gabe by Sunday, July 15 with your name, title/composer, instrument, and whether you need an accompanist or microphones. We will need this information well in advance so we can craft an inspiring, and smooth-running worship service, as well as an efficient sound-check schedule. Please contact Gabe to schedule additional practice times.

Summer Choir July 8, July 15, July 22–9:45am
Adults and youth are welcome to participate in Summer Choir for any or all of the Sundays we sing. No commitment is expected. Just show up for rehearsal at 9:45am in the sanctuary on the days you wish to participate. We will learn a new anthem each Sunday which will then be shared as part of the 10:30am worship service that morning. We will rehearse and offer our anthems from the sanctuary floor so that this opportunity may be accessible to all.
Community Hymn Sing July 15, 2:00 pm, Cowan Chapel
Did you know that singing with others releases endorphins in our brains that promote a sense of well-being and community connectedness? Come see, hear, sense, and feel for yourself! In this informal setting, you can shout out the hymns you want to hear or sing, we’ll keep a list, and together sing as many of your favorite tunes as time allows. With Gabe accompanying, we’ll be supported as we join in this historic practice of music and fellowship. All ages welcome!
Handbell Anthem in Worship July 22
Rehearsals July 18, 7:00pm & July 22, 9:00am
Basic rhythm-reading ability is helpful, but not necessary, to ring with us in worship this summer. Past and current ringers will play along side you, and will help teach anything you need to know with their trademark humor and grace. You might take this opportunity to see if you want to join this ministry on a regular basis. Perhaps you wish you could join but have scheduling issues preventing a weekly commitment. Or, maybe you just want to stretch yourself and trying something new for the fun of it! Whatever your motivation, we would be delighted to make music with you! Adults and youth are most welcome.
We will meet on the sanctuary floor at 7:00-8:30pm July 18 and at 9:00am on Sunday to warm-up. Please contact Pearl Marshall (pmarshall@union-church.org) as soon as possible if you are interested in ringing the handbell anthem this summer. Music will be selected based on the music backgrounds and skills of those participating.
Hymn Favorites on Handbells Sunday, August 12, 2:00pm
Ringers will prepare arrangements of our congregation’s top ten favorite hymn tunes for this fun, informal concert, which were selected the first two Sundays of June.
Whether you are a current ringer with UCHE, or you have rung bells in another time or place, we would love to have you join us for this performance. We will ring arrangements of our congregation’s ten most-requested hymns. There are three more scheduled “full ensemble” rehearsals July 11, 25, and August 8, at 7 pm in the sanctuary. Small groups may practice as schedules allow. Please contact Pearl (pmarshall@union-church.org) if you’d like to participate in the full ensemble and/or a small group so we can find the best arrangements for us.
