Offering of Letters May 12 It’s time once again for the Offering of Letters. Union Church became a Covenanted Member of Bread for the World in 2004 and has made an Offering of Letters every year since then. This coming Sunday, May 12, at our brunch, we invite you to stay and write a letter to your Senators and Congressperson. Information on this year’s focus, as well as writing materials and envelopes will be provided. We will provide addresses, collect and count the letters, put on the stamps, and get them in the mail so that we can report back to BFW.
Even if you can’t be present Sunday, you can find the same information on the Bread for the World website, bread.org. But we would very much like to “count” those letters, as well, so please drop them off at the church office. We will be happy to add the stamps.
Theology in the Round, 6:30pm 1st and 3rd Wednesdays! Join in an open discussion of a broad range of theological topics hosted by the Rev. Dr. Jeff Pool and Rev. Kent. Anyone and everyone is welcome, regardless of experience or background in the topic! We listen to one another and learn from everyone’s experience. Next chance to join in: May 15
Baptism Sunday on Pentecost, May 19th! Baptism into the Christian faith is the recognition by the church of two things: God’s full embrace, forgive-ness, and love of each person, and the person’s full embrace, commitment and love of the life Christ invites us to. It’s an intersection of God’s love and our promises to walk in the way of Jesus.
On May 19 Rev. Kent is inviting all who may have been considering such walk to make their witness and be baptized. In the tradition of Union’s long history, a person may choose to be baptized in the service itself with a small amount of water either poured or applied to their head, or may choose to be fully immersed, which happens immediately after the service in Brushy Fork (near Rev. Kent and Diana’s house).
If you are feeling led to mark your promise and God’s love in this way, please text, email or phone the pastor at 859-979-5368, or kgilbert@union-church.org for more information, questions, and details. It will make for a very special Pentecost celebration!
Apt/House with walk in Shower Needed: The Lockwood Family (kin to Kelly and Terry Mehler) will soon be moving to Berea, and have reached out for help finding a place for Jordan Lockwood’s father, Steve, so he can move here too. He needs a one story place with a walk in shower and access to a flat sidewalk so he can walk his small dog, Teddy. He is looking for an apartment or house in or near Berea and his budget is $1200/month and plans to come around the beginning of July. If you any leads or ideas, please let the church office know and we’ll help make the connections!
Berea Leadership Experience July 15-19 Forming leaders who can successfully navigate the kinds of everyday conflicts we all experience.
We’re excited to share our theme for this summer’s experience, “I am enough.” You may recognize the inspiration as coming from the Barbie movie!
We are able to accept every camper regardless of their ability to pay (until all spots fill up) because of generous individuals and organizations like you!
If you’d like to sponsor a camper or make a general donation, please do so at this link: https://bit.ly/3mr93OJ or via check to Union Church, 200 Prospect Street, Berea, KY 40403, with BLE in the memo line.
Your $60 gift will make a weeklong camp experience possible for a child and support the important work of a local leader.
Utility assistance is available, LIHEAP applications now open
Warmer weather is approaching, meaning that people will be cranking up the air conditioning. However, the cost of utilities can get overwhelming for families.
Applications are now open for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance program – or LIHEAP, which provides utility assistance to low income residents as part of their Spring Subsidy. Info is at foothillscap.org
According to Kentucky River Foothills, LIHEAP is the main avenue they use to offer utility assistance. The LIHEAP Program has two components to assist income-eligible participants: subsidy and crisis. Subsidy is a one-time assistance, based on household size and income. Crisis will assist in paying a disconnect notice or assist with bulk fuel such as propane, kerosene, wood, or coal.
It’s crucial for eligible households to apply promptly, as applications will be accepted through May 31, 2024, or until funds are depleted.
To apply, email alyle@foothillscap.org
