Congratulations to Dr. Steve Gowler and Dr. Andrea Woodward! At the Berea College commencement ceremony, May 5, two members of our Union family were recognized for their excellence. Former Moderator, Dr. Steve Gowler, received the Seabury Teaching Award, the highest honor bestowed on a member of the faculty. He will retire from Berea after more than 20 years of service this summer. . The Paul C. Hagar award for Excellence in Advising was awarded to Dr. Andrea Woodward, professor in Child and Family Studies. We give thanks for these and the many other ways Steve and Andrea enrich our community.
Baptism Sunday on Pentecost, May 19th! Baptism into the Christian faith is the recognition by the church of two things: God’s full embrace, forgive-ness, and love of each person, and the person’s full embrace, commitment and love of the life Christ invites us to. It’s an intersection of God’s love and our promises to walk in the way of Jesus.
On May 19 Rev. Kent is inviting all who may have been considering such walk to make their witness and be baptized. In the tradition of Union’s long history, a person may choose to be baptized in the service itself with a small amount of water either poured or applied to their head, or may choose to be fully immersed, which happens immediately after the service in Brushy Fork (near Rev. Kent and Diana’s house).
If you are feeling led to mark your promise and God’s love in this way, please text, email or phone the pastor at 859-979-5368, or kgilbert@union-church.org for more information, questions, and details. It will make for a very special Pentecost celebration!

He is looking for an apartment or house in or near Berea and his budget is $1200/month and plans to come around the beginning of July. If you any leads or ideas, please let the church office know and we’ll help make the connections!

Utility assistance is available, LIHEAP applications now open
Warmer weather is approaching, meaning that people will be cranking up the air conditioning. However, the cost of utilities can get overwhelming for families.
Applications are now open for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance program – or LIHEAP, which provides utility assistance to low income residents as part of their Spring Subsidy. Info is at foothillscap.org
According to Kentucky River Foothills, LIHEAP is the main avenue they use to offer utility assistance. The LIHEAP Program has two components to assist income-eligible participants: subsidy and crisis. Subsidy is a one-time assistance, based on household size and income. Crisis will assist in paying a disconnect notice or assist with bulk fuel such as propane, kerosene, wood, or coal.
It’s crucial for eligible households to apply promptly, as applications will be accepted through May 31, 2024, or until funds are depleted.
To apply, email alyle@foothillscap.org
