For the 20th year, the Berea community will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a day of speakers, marching and music on Monday, Jan. 20, 2020. We would like to invite alumni to spend the day with us, as we focus on the present-day vision of MLK’s work for equality, honor the movement of the past, and envision where we can go and how we can get there with Dr. King’s legacy in the 21st century.
MLK DAY SCHEDULE:
10 a.m.
– Gather at Union Church (200 Prospect St.), where pastor Rev. Kent Gilbert, will give a welcome.
– Berea Mayor Bruce Fraley and Berea Chief of Police Eric Scott will speak on the present-day vision of MLK’s work for equality and Berea College President Lyle Roelofs will talk about why we march.
– Congregational singing of songs from the Civil Rights era, led by the Black Music Ensemble. Followed by a program, “We Still Speak,” which will honor the Civil Rights Movement of the past.
11 a.m.
-March to First Christian Church (206 Chestnut St.), which will be live-streamed on our Berea College Facebook page.
– Refreshments will be served and marchers will be welcomed by First Christian Church pastors, Rev. Lisa Caldwell-Reiss ’91 and Rev. Mark Caldwell-Reiss. Speakers will give their thoughts on how to envision Dr. King’s legacy in the 21st century.
Noon
Lunch in the Mountaineer Dining Hall, Alumni Bldg.
3 p.m.
Annual MLK Memorial Convocation | Phelps-Stokes Chapel.
Featuring Rev. Dr. Bernard LaFayette, a member and co-founder of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee and a trusted colleague of Dr. King, participated in the most significant civil rights campaigns of the 1960s.
