June 8 is Pentecost! Wear Red to Symbolize Flames of the Holy Spirit!
Pentecost celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit 50 days after Easter. Pentecost is the birthday of the Christian church. At Union Church, it’s become our custom to wear red to church to reflect the color of the tongues of fire that symbolize the Holy Spirit. Before Jesus was crucified, he told his disciples that the Holy Spirit would come after him: “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever — the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” John 14:16–18
And 40 days after Jesus was resurrected (10 days after he ascended into heaven), that promise was fulfilled when Peter and the early Church were in Jerusalem for Pentecost: “When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” Acts 2:1–4
The Berea Arts Council will use the Community Room & 101 June 2-6 and 9-13 for its day camps (about 8-3). Watch out for comings and goings in the parking lot and the building. We’re glad to have the opportunity to host!
On June 7, 3 pm, Union Church will host Dr. Larry Shinn’s Memorial Service and the reception following. All are invited to attend this celebration of life. Berea College will provide some sweet treats; and church friends are asked to bring plates of cheese, crackers and fruit. Bring to the kitchen by noon Saturday, or as you come to the service. Thank you!!
Volunteers are needed in the evening on Saturday, June 7, to transform the sanctuary to Pentecost after Larry Shinn’s service. If you’re willing to help, please come to the sanctuary about 5:30. 4 or 5 people can accomplish that task pretty quickly – we have folks who can give direction, just need a bit of labor. Many hands make light work!

Report on the May 2 Fundraiser for Jobs for American Graduates (JAG) held at Union, from the program director: “Thanks to the generosity of the community, we were able to raise around $3,000 through our fund-raisers, all of which was sent directly to JAGKY. Shortly afterward, a larger company made a generous donation to JAGKY, and they made the amazing decision to use those funds to secure our program for next year. We are thrilled to say that we’re officially set for another year! We are now focusing on grant opportunities to help sustain the program for years to come, and we’re feeling hopeful and encouraged.”
