My heart, O God, is steadfast, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and make music. ~Psalm 57:7
Truer words could not be said about faithful member and teacher, Jennie Kiteck who entered the wider life this morning after a short stay at the Hospice Care Plus center in Richmond. Her steadfast heart, her loving devotion to children and music, her bright demeanor in the face of multiple challenges, her resilience all defined a long and loving life. Our sorrow at losing such a light is only countered by the peace I know she has and the release from her suffering we all hoped for.
Though recent years hardly dimmed her spirit, Jennie’s hearing and congestive heart failure impeded her activities. For years she sang and made music at Union Church and taught literally hundreds and hundreds of elementary students the joys of stringed instruments. For many years Jennie ran summer music camps and taught group and private lessons to nearly any child who stood still long enough to be welcomed by her warm smile. She was also “instrumental” in forming a wonderful string quintet that played for many years with local friends.
Though she was making what seemed like a good recovery from a stint in cardiac rehab, last week her health took a somewhat sudden turn. Surrounded by family she was moved to the Compassionate Care Center and soon became unable to rouse. After years of worsening hearing, I hope now she is once again able to hear the music to which she devoted her life and taught so many others to make and cherish. She truly had a steadfast faith in our loving God and lived to show that love in all she did. The music of the spheres and angels are hers now, unclouded by age or infirmity. Long may she sing and make music in the house of the Lord.
A private family service will be held this weekend with a public memorial scheduled for later in the year. The family have have asked memorial contributions to be made to the Union Church Nurture and Care Team fund, 200 Prospect, Berea, KY 40403. You may also use the “Donate” link to make a gift.
