The membership of Union Church invites you to join us for an open house event on September 24, 2023, in celebration of 100 years of the John G Fee Memorial Building. As well as a home for Union Church, the building has served the Berea community as a gathering place and incubator for local organizations for generations.
Union Church began in 1853 under Rev. John Gregg Fee. It was Fee’s revival in “The Glade,” known now as Berea, that not only began the church congregation, but led to the establishment of the city of Berea and Berea College. After several different sites for meeting in its first 67 years – the Glades Meeting House, the Berea College Chapel, and the Parish House – the congregation made plans to build the John G. Fee Memorial building, breaking ground under Pastor Robert Hutchins in 1920.
The building was completed and dedicated in September 1922, and has stood across from historic Boone Tavern and alongside the campus of Berea College for over 100 years.
Union Church will celebrate the history, tradition and preservation of the John G Fee Memorial Building on September 24, 2023 (2:00 pm – 5:00 pm) with a community event, “Grace in This Place – Celebrating 100 Years,” which will include tours of the building, music, a reception, informational displays, and rededication of the building. The event is open to the public and all are welcome to attend, and guests will have the opportunity to share their favorite memories of the space.
