Some very special guests joined us for Wednesday Night Live this week: four young adults who are walking more than 3000 miles, all the way across the U.S.A., to raise awareness of the DREAM Act. They started in San Fransisco, and will conclude on November 2 in Washington, D.C.
The walkers told us their experiences of growing up as Americans, singing the “Star Spangled Banner” proudly, but not being documented and therefore unable to use their education, skills, and talents. One spent time in a detention center, and talked about how frightening and isolating the experience was, and how many families had been ripped apart by that system. Each had stories of loved ones for whom they are walking, people who are living in fear and hiding.
The Campaign for an American Dream, the walkers’ official title, has been stopping in schools, colleges, and communities of faith all over the country to tell their story. They are headed to Georgia next, and then working their way toward D.C. Their entry into D.C. will be a triumphal march, to which they invited the whole community.
