On the back of each pew is a humble, but important part of our worship experience. Pew racks hold bibles for those seeking guidance, hymnals that help us lift our voice in song, and (often) a pencil stub to help keep young hands and minds occupied during services.
Sadly, our current pew racks, installed in 1922, aren’t large enough to hold both hymnals and bibles. We have to pile the books on the pews themselves, taking up valuable seating. They also don’t accommodate niceties like tissue boxes, the welcome information for visitors, or enough pens/pencils, etc.
For a $50 contribution, you can help support worship and music in memory or in honor of someone you love. New wider, and more functional racks, will be made locally and crafted from wood salvaged from our own removed pews. They will be stained to match and installed ready to sustain worship for the next 100 years!
We will need 132 individual racks, so there is plenty of opportunity to honor all the people in your life who might be important. Here’s some ideas of whom you might remember with your gifts: A beloved pastor from your past; the first person who took you to church and let you draw on the bulletin; members of your family; friends no longer with us who shared your row at one time; Choir members or a director who brought music that mattered… the possibilities are limitless! Each person honored and the location of their rack will be recorded in a special page of our memorial book, showing the location of each rack.
You may make your donation via check, cash or credit card to “Union Church” and put pew racks in the memo line. To use your credit card or e-check donate online or via text message ( send “$[amount] Hymnal Racks” to 859-448-3403). Thanks to all those who do humble things to make worship possible. Thanks to you who are honoring them with your donation!
