Global Warming: A Climate “Wake Up” Story with Michael Dowd and Connie Barlow
Wednesday, May 8, 12:00 pm
. the unprecedented retreat of Arctic sea ice
. the near-total surface layer melt of the Greenland ice cap
. the Colorado Springs wildfire
. the midwestern drought
. the mile-high Arizona dust-storm
. Hurricane Sandy
For nationally celebrated authors and teachers Connie Barlow and Rev. Michael Dowd evidence of the speed and magnitude of human-caused climate disturbance became undeniable in 2012, clarifying it, for them, as the fundamental moral issue of our time.
Michael and Connie’s fresh and extemporaneous storytelling explores how last year’s climate-change news and statistics rocked them out of complacency and offers an invitation for program participants to make a similar shift in their outlook and priorities.
Through their personal “waking up” story, Connie and Michael share a frank overview of the challenges of global-warming while also offering opportunities for hope and suggestions for action.
As members of the generation in power, Michael and Connie exhort their fellow “boomers” to awaken to the “generational injustice” that will become our sad legacy if we continue address climate change with a business as usual mentality.
This event is brought to you by Kentucky Interfaith Power and Light and Union Church.
The presenters:Rev. Michael Dowd is a former pastor, veteran sustainability activist, and big history/big integrity evangelist. An outspoken religious naturalist, he is the author of the bestselling bridge-building book, Thank God for Evolution: How the Marriage of Science and Religion Will Transform Your Life and Our World (which was endorsed by Nobel Prize-winning scientists, noted skeptics and religious leaders across the spectrum). His passion is showing how a sacred view of death, human nature, and the trajectory of big history can inspire and empower each of us to live with greater integrity, joy, and zest for life.
Connie Barlow is an acclaimed author of popular science books and articles, and developer of The great Story website. Her most recent book, The Ghosts of Evolution, was Amazon.com’s top-recommended science book for several months. It and her previous books explore the nexus of science, meaning, and inspiration. An evolutionary humanist and Unitarian Universalist, Connie is also a well-known developer of curricula for children’s religious education around our shared evolutionary story.
Together Michael and Connie permanently travel North America and have addressed more than 1,700 religious and non-religious groups since 2002 – ranging from Unitarian Universalists and secular high school, college, and university students, to Catholic, Protestant, and Evangelical Christian churches, to New Thought, New Age, and Integral groups. They illustrate how the science-based history of everything and everyone can be interpreted in ways that inspire people to cooperate across political and religious differences in service of a just and thriving future for all.
