You may have noticed that Children’s Church is up and running (sometimes literally running)! We are trying a new format this year. Instead of using a set curriculum for the nine-month session, we will be exploring a new avenue for faith development and personal growth each month, inviting community members to join us to share their expertise.
During the month of September, the kids have been challenged to focus some creative energy on the way we can use language to express what’s unique about our spirits. First, we started out with the same page of words, and used the technique of Blackout Poetry to each create something very different from the same thing. Then we worked together to write our own “Where I’m From” poem, modeled on George Ella Lyon’s poem by the same name. Finally, we are creating Poetry Collages, using words and images that reflect the things that make us US. Creative work can settle the soul, and the kids are doing a beautiful, spirited job of embodying this. Each child will be keeping a journal of their work this year, and they plan to share their monthly projects with all of you.
We have also been lucky enough to be joined by Pearl Marshall, who is helping us learn a special song for Children’s Sabbath, October 21. It involves drums and a bit of Swahili, so you really won’t want to miss it! If you are interested in volunteering as an occasional substitute teacher or you’d like to join us on the rug to share a special faith development project with the kids, contact Laura at joyfulsunflower@gmail.com or 859-358-0106. If you’ve got kids K-5th grade, they’re welcome to come to Children’s Church (you can stay with them if you’d like to).
