On Tuesday, December 15, the Berea City Council passed a resolution by Diane Kerby stating that “acts of intolerance and hateful actions that have frightened and disturbed local citizens and visitors in the city of Berea,” and that “systemic violence, racial injustice and harassment of members of this community damage the health of individuals and communities…” The resolution goes on to say that the Berea City Council resolves to “develop programs and provide support in order to reduce prejudice and violence among citizens and to better understand the meaning and importance of coexistence in a community founded on the principles of social justice.”
Berea Human Rights Commission Chair and member of Union Church, Carla Gilbert, reported that in 2015 the BHRC had 12 reports of racial discrimination, three reports of discrimination based on sexual orientation, four reports of racial discrimination, one on basis of disability, and one case of housing discrimination. When the vote was taken, all council members in attendance voted in favor. Council members Chad Hembree and Chester Powell were absent.
We celebrate the intention of our Council to protect the rights of all citizens their resolve to create an atmosphere of welcome and inclusion. The pastors and many members and friends of Union Church continue to advocate for a more inclusive “Human Rights Ordinance” that would extend the authority of the HRC to investigate and respond to all claims of discrimination. The Council’s recognition of the needs of the community and their desire to work toward peaceful coexistence for all is deeply encouraging.
