Special Welcome to Guests from UUCL: Today we are delighted to welcome friends from the “north” as the Union Choir is joined by the choir of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Lexington (www.uucl.org) and their director, Sally McCord. Our choir traveled to UUCL in July to sing there and today we are delighted to complete the exchange. Our pastors are colleagues in several regional endeavors, and Rev. Diana Hultgren, Rev. Kent’s wife, is a Community Minister serving in chaplaincy with UUCL.
She was ordained there in 2016. How good it is when all God’s peeps make a joyful noise together!
Sept. 1, Memorial Service & Small-bites reception in memory of Dr. John V. Payne. A memorial service for John Payne will be held in the main sanctuary at 3pm, Sunday, September 1. Local friends and church family are asked to bring small-bites for a potluck reception afterwards, honoring his great love of such community gatherings (and really good food). John will especially be remembered for his corn pudding, a perennial favorite at Union Church gatherings, and we hope someone will bring some to remember him by.
Birthday Party August 25! You are invited to celebrate Jennifer Elam’s birthday with a potluck, fellowship and some music – on 8/25 from 5:30 -8:30pm, at 300 Harrison Road, Berea. The theme is “Creation and Re-birth”. If you want to give her a gift, buy her new book(s).
Memory Café Aug. 27, 1:30 pm. Those experiencing memory loss and their care partners are invited to a short social hour in the Community Room. Music, treats, and fellowship!
Mission Board sponsored trip Aug. 29, to hear Apache Stronghold
During the Mission Trip to the Arizona border Carla, Dorothy, Tennant and Donna attended a gathering to learn about Apache Stronghold, a group that has been fighting the destruction of Apache holy lands known as Oak Flats for over ten years.
Apache Stronghold is currently engaged in a cross country Prayer Journey which began in July and it will conclude on September 11, 2024 when they file their appeal at the US Supreme Court in Washington, DC. The group is scheduled to stop in Lexington, Thursday, August 29. Union Church is arranging a carpool to this event departing from the Church at 5:00pm. Contact Tennant Kirk (tykirk53@gmail.com) if you are interested in attending.
Community Meals Every Wednesday 5:30pm-6:30pm: “Open Table” is a “pay what you can” ($0-$$) catered meal open to anyone. Chef Deb Beishline and a wonderful crew of volunteers prepare the menu each week always with GF and Vegetarian-friendly options (other needs can be accommodated on request!). Our hope is to remember the gifts of connection with great food the chance to “rub elbows” with neighbors. The food is great, the company is better, the hungry are fed, and we pray the love Jesus will be shown!
