Or—closer to home—Maggie Park invites all to join this action if you’re in Berea: Monday April 22 at 11:45am some concerned folks are meeting in Berea at the UP Initiative office on Glades Rd next to Dollar Tree, to march two blocks over to Sen. Jared Carpenter’s office to talk about our concerns with HB5/Safer KY Act, while also delivering a petition to fund a permanent year-round emergency housing shelter in Madison County.
With HB5/Safer KY Bill being passed last week and still including the anti-camping clause that has criminalized homelessness, the Madison County Tenants Union is going to formally submit our petition to fund permanent emergency housing to Mr. Carpenter during a public demonstration.
This is happening on Monday April 22 because at that same time the US Supreme Court will be hearing arguments about another law with the exact same clause that criminalizes homelessness; Grants Pass v Johnson. That verdict will either uphold or strike down our own Kentucky anti-camping clause that criminalized homelessness.
Healing Grief through Creativity, a Berea Learnshop, will be led by Dr. Jennifer Elam on April 27, 1-4 pm. Learn about this and other Learnshops and register at visitberea.com/learnshops

Utility assistance is available, LIHEAP applications now open
Warmer weather is approaching, meaning that people will be cranking up the air conditioning. However, the cost of utilities can get overwhelming for families.
Applications are now open for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance program – or LIHEAP, which provides utility assistance to low income residents as part of their Spring Subsidy. Info is at foothillscap.org
According to Kentucky River Foothills, LIHEAP is the main avenue they use to offer utility assistance. The LIHEAP Program has two components to assist income-eligible participants: subsidy and crisis. Subsidy is a one-time assistance, based on household size and income. Crisis will assist in paying a disconnect notice or assist with bulk fuel such as propane, kerosene, wood, or coal.
It’s crucial for eligible households to apply promptly, as applications will be accepted through May 31, 2024, or until funds are depleted.
To apply, email alyle@foothillscap.org
