BLE was a transformational experience to 42 local children and teens, ages 7-13. Because of the generous support of our community, we could say “yes” to every family who asked for a scholarship. Thirty-three of the campers received financial assistance, and our many community partnerships ensured that every child in Madison County could learn the skills to collaboratively resolve conflict.
Here are some moments we want to share with you about the impact of the Experience:
In our first camp gathering, we introduce everyone to our Mediation Zone. In a special set-aside room, campers, facilitated by trained staff, have the opportunity to work through their conflicts together. As the director explained how it works, a camper shared her experience in the Zone at last year’s camp with her arm around a friend. “We used the Mediation Zone last year. It helped us to become friends again.”
During one of the Mindful Movement classes, campers sat on their yoga mats and read aloud the affirmations on the wall, telling themselves words like, “I am smart.” The instructor explained we can’t have empathy for others if we don’t have empathy for ourselves. Several campers pointed out that they are used to affirming and encouraging others, but that this was the first time they had been encouraged to affirm themselves.
In Conflict Resolution class, the campers needed to complete a puzzle together, where each of them had different pieces. One rule was each person had to put his or her own piece in. One of the girls refused to put her pieces in. The instructor responded, “We need to wait until she is ready. If we force her, we might harm her.” So the group patiently waited, while also engaging the girl in a non-threatening and friendly way. In a few minutes, the girl shared she was ready, joined in the circle again, and put her pieces in to complete the puzzle.
These are just some of the special moments from the Experience, moments that have the possibility to transform lives and make an impact in our community. Thank you for being part of the Berea Leadership Experience this year and helping make these moments happen.
Peace to you, and to our Community,
