On no subject are our ideas more warped and pitiable than on death…..Let children walk with nature, let them see the beautiful blending and communions of death and life, their joyous inseparable unity, as taught in woods and meadows, plains and mountains and streams of our blessed star, and they will learn that death is stingless indeed, and as beautiful as life, and that the grave has no victory for it never fights.”
~ John Muir, A Thousand-mile Walk to the Sea

And if I go,
while you’re still here…
Know that I live on,
Vibrating to a different measure
Behind a thin veil you
cannot see through.
You will not see me,
So you must have faith.
I wait for the time when
we can soar together again,
Both aware of each other.
Until then,
live your life to the fullest
And when you need me,
Just whisper my name in your heart,
…I will be there.

C. Douglas Hindman May 16, 1941 ~ September 3, 2023
Berea resident Douglas (Doug) Hindman, 82, died peacefully September 3, 2023, with loved ones by his side, after battling illness for the past year.
Doug was born May 16, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois, to Charles and June Doverspike Hindman. After graduating from MacMurray College in Illinois in 1963, he completed his Ph.D. at Florida State University in 1968. Doug then taught in the Psychology department at Eastern Kentucky University for 30 years until his retirement in 1997.
Doug met Nancy Stewart Hindman, his wife of 56 years, in 1963.
Their deep friendship led to a loving marriage in 1964. Coming to Kentucky to work at Eastern Kentucky University, they first settled in Richmond, where their daughter Heather was born, then moved to Berea upon retirement. Doug was a faithful servant at Union Church in Berea, serving on the Worship Board, supporting the Stephen Ministry Program and Memory Keepers Support Group, and founding the Church Bridge Club, in addition to helping with many other church projects and community endeavors.
An experienced and avid traveler, Doug led Sierra Club trips around the world. He and Nancy were generous patrons of the arts through the Berea Arts Council. Doug also remained active in the Kentucky Psychological Association. In 2020, Doug was named Volunteer of the Year by the Berea Home Village organization. He was a dedicated supporter of the Kentucky Environmental Foundation Chemical Weapons Working Group and was grateful to live to see the last chemical warhead destroyed at the Blue Grass Army Depot.
Doug was preceded in death by his wife Nancy Stewart Hindman in 2020. He is survived by his daughter Heather Hindman of Austin, Texas; sister Sarah (Sally) Hindman of Berea, KY; brother John Hindman of Roseville, CA; niece Katharine Keune of Boxford, MA; and nephew Robert Hindman of Kosice, Slovenia.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Doug’s memory to Berea Home Village, 305 Estill St., Berea, KY 40403.
