Friends, it is with horror and deep sadness that we learned of the shooting at Shady Hook Elementary School in Connecticut. We mourn and grieve, as Rachel weeping over her slaughtered children. We add them to our continued lament for the schoolchildren in China killed yesterday, shoppers killed earlier this week, and the thousands of others who are daily killed by violence. Each death is one too many. To have so many is overwhelming, maddening, and angering.
Though there are truly no words in an incidence like this, we offer this prayer:
In the midst of the darkness of this hour, we pray for the Light to shine through our darkness:
For the light of God’s comfort and love to embrace the families of those killed.
For the light of God’s peace to end all violence.
For the light of God’s healing to bind up the brokenhearted.
For the light of God’s justice to transform all evil.
For the light of God’s mercy to help us turn our “swords into plowshares.”
For the light of God’s people, to be the community that the world needs, a community working together to make the kingdom of God a reality.
Come, Light of the World, May your healing light shine into our darkness.

We have found this document to help with those of you needing to talk with your children about what has happened.
We will hold a special prayer for all of these victims at our Long Night service on Wednesday, Dec. 19th, at 7pm.
May you all be surrounded with love this day.
