A great Sunday at church today! Thanks to our worship designers Debbonnaire Kovacs, Jennifer Melton, Sharona Nelson, and Laura Nagle, who helped us all engage the idea of “Being in and building a beloved community.”
We also welcomed back the Handbell Choir and Chancel Vocal Choir who filled the space with ringing and singing to lift our spirits. Worship leader Alvera Perman set the tone with her beautiful reading of our “Call” from a poem by Carrie Newcomer:
“Cups of Light”
You always arrive bringing light.
Carried in chipped pitchers,
And dented buckets,
Sloshing all that luminous liquid
Out like soapy water
Washing down the muddy floorboards
Of my weary or worried days.
Yes, there are others,
The ones who came carrying
Jars full of shadows
Which are also a kind of gift
I suppose.
But you (my friend)
You always
Always
Arrive bringing dawn.
You open the windows,
Repair the screen door,
Without fanfare,
Or agenda,
Pour out and share
Cups of light.
And when I am most dry,
You let me drink it all down,
Wiping my thirsty soul
With the back of a grateful hand.
Pastor Kent helped us meditate and reflect on the story from Mark 7 where Jesus himself gets told off and called out, and how that helps all of us be “in” for the love and challenges of love that God intends for us. We explored how we have light within and need to pour it from our cups, and sometimes need the filling of our light bucket, too. And in a beautiful offering of Light, three new members united in fellowship with the congregation. We are so happy to welcome Ally Nurre, Jen Eich, and Amy Schill! (Pictures coming soon!)
Join us all this month at 10:30 as we continue to Build a Beloved Community of Outsiders, just like you. This is the month to bring friends, to gather your light with others, and to be “All In” for crafting a community of grace, one that is beloved for all people. The Prayers and action stations, the reflections and the video of the service can all be found at the Union-Church.Org Website. Or subscribe to our YouTube Channel and get notices of uploads whenever they happen! Don’t forget to share the good news with friends. We Want Everyone to Have an “IN.”
