August 21 will see the first total solar eclipse to cross the US in many decades, and it’s coming right through Kentucky! You can join Union Church on a special van trip to experience it first hand with veteran eclipse astronomer, Jeff Hutton.

We’ll travel to a viewing site in Hopkinsville, KY, or Maryville, TN (depending on cloud cover). Both sites have restrooms and options for food purchase. Your cost of $20/person covers the transportation and site reservations! (For a look at the full path, check out this Solar Eclipse 2017 Interactive Map.)
Both locations for possible viewing are approximately 3 hours from Berea, so we’ll need to leave early and it will be a long day. Because there are interesting phenomena to observe as the moon’s shadow races across the landscape, we’ll want to be at our chosen site 2 hours in advance, so be prepared for an epic road trip.
It will all be worth it, though! Jeff Hutton, long-time friend of the congregation and frequent lecturer at the Cincinnati Observatory, will have a number of specially filtered glasses and astronomical instruments for us to use. NEVER LOOK AT THE SUN DIRECTLY, EVEN DURING THE PARTIAL PHASES OF THE ECLIPSE. Only for the short time the moon fully obscures the face is it safe. Otherwise you must use glasses to protect your eyes.
We have spaces for 25 participants, so use the link to sign up now. We’ll collect the money later!
