LOVE DEMANDS CARE IN FINANCE
Extravagant Care and Generosity in Our Stewardship
From our Mission Statement:
We will boldly and creatively embody the life and ministry of Jesus with extravagant generosity and care in the stewardship of the gifts we have been given. We will offer and organize our time, talent, and treasure in loving service and outreach with useful facilities and supported staff and programs, striving always to be agents of God’s inclusive love. With care and diligence we will seek the well-being of our community, of all of our volunteers and staff, and of God’s earth in all that we undertake alone and together.
The Union Church Finance Board members believe (in common with the rest of us) that a budget is a theological document. What we support with our money shows what our values are in more practical terms than what we say or what the Mission Statement says. From its founding as an abolitionist church, through its work for peace during numerous wars, to its fight for LGBTQ+ rights, through the global pandemic and Black Lives Matter movement and so much more, Union Church’s treasure has been used in causes of peace, equality, and justice.
This board, whose membership always includes the Treasurer and Financial Secretary, works in consultation with the Properties and Administration boards, and is in charge of all business and financial affairs of the church except for personnel oversight. Its responsibilities include:
- Administering the finances of the church, including submitting an annual budget to the church council who, after consideration, submit it to the congregation
- Establishing policies for managing monies, investments, and financial records with an annual audit of the church’s books
- Coordinating an annual stewardship campaign to encourage the financial support of the congregation at large.
