what we believe

Love Demands Inclusion

ALL ARE WELCOME HERE.
NO KIDDING!
NO EXCEPTIONS.

As a progressive, ecumenical, multi-denominational church, Union Church Berea does not have a traditional list of doctrines to which one must subscribe in order to be a member. Our founder, Rev. John Gregg Fee, believed that “the division of Christians into sects and denominations is contrary to the letter and the spirit of the Gospel, a hindrance to reforms, and to the greatest progress of Christ’s kingdom” [Fee’s Autobiography, held at Berea College, p. 189.]

Proactively productize standardized leadership without empowered networks. Monotonectally revolutionize resource-leveling architectures and compelling experiences. Professionally coordinate 24/365 process improvements whereas top-line interfaces. Credibly deliver mission-critical benefits whereas maintainable solutions. Competently reinvent client-centric partnerships without wireless channels.

Our statement of faith is to live by these fellowship principles that date back to when we first gathered. It’s spoken by all of us each time we welcome new members, and affirmed in the ways we work together. It reads:

Union Church welcomes all followers of Christ and works with all who work with him, working by love, respecting each person’s conscience, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Compassion

As pastors, caregivers, and congregation members who care, we know that love demands that we stand with each other in both trial and rejoicing. Learn about requesting prayer or other help here. You can also access our weekly prayer readings.

Justice

We believe that love demands we pay close attention to whether all in our communities have equal access to fair housing, fair wages, healthy food, jobs that matter, and access, as well, to some kind of recourse when these things fail. Union Church has fought against injustice and racism since its founding in 1853.

What to expect from this beloved community

We do not believe in conformity. In fact, here at Union Church, we believe love demands diversity and rejoices in it. You will not be told what to believe or how to act, and the only expectations we have are that you be true to yourself and your values, and that you speak and act in love.

We do not believe in absolutes, or in certainty, or in absolute certainty. We believe love demands questions, and faith does, too. You will never be shut down for having doubts or questions; your doubts and questions will be as welcomed as you are. You will find a place to discuss and dig into your faith. After all, how can your faith be truly yours if you have not taken it apart, turned it inside out, examined it, and put it back together?

We do believe in your giftedness. You have unique and special thoughts, attitudes, and abilities that we are lacking if you are not here. We happily welcome you to explore whether Union Church is the best place for you to bloom and grow.
